Artificial Intelligence: USP online seminar discusses the future of machine learning

Machine learning will be the focus of the next seminar in the Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence series. Free and open to anyone interested, the online event is promoted by the Artificial Intelligence Center (C4AI) and takes place next Thursday, June 17, starting at 5 p.m., with streaming on the Center's YouTube channel.

Established by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP, the state of São Paulo's main research funding agency) and IBM, C4AI is an Engineering Research Center headquartered at the Innovation Center of the University of São Paulo (USP), in São Paulo, and one of its hubs is the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (ICMC) at USP, in São Carlos.

The seminar will be given in English by professor Trevor Darrell, from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States. During the event, the professor will explain how fully unsupervised machine learning and so-called Advisable Machine Learning can work together to drastically reduce the level of supervision required for real-world tasks. He will also present recent scientific research in the field.

Darrell is a founder and one of the leaders of the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) lab, the Berkeley DeepDrive (BDD) Industrial Consortia, and the BAIR Commons program, recently launched in partnership with Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and other partners.

The professor's research group develops algorithms to enable visual recognition across a variety of platforms and applications. His interests include computer vision, machine learning, computer graphics, and perception-based human-computer interfaces.
