Why Is It So Challenging to Qualify Young People in the IT Field?

According to Brasscom (the Brazilian association of technology companies), it is estimated that by 2025 the Brazilian market will have a shortfall of 530,000 IT professionals. However, even with this gap in job openings, an intriguing question arises: why are there unemployed developers alongside the need to qualify young people?

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to lead Instituto Atravessando a Ponte, a Brazilian institute that aims to train low-income young people in Information Technology (IT). This journey has been marked by significant challenges, especially when it comes to preparing these young people to enter higher education and the job market.

It is undeniable that the IT field is one of the most promising in terms of career opportunities in Brazil. However, even with the growing demand for qualified professionals, we face a paradoxical reality: while the market cries out for talent, there are unemployed developers. This dichotomy raises important questions about the challenges faced in training and placing these young people in the job market.

The challenge of qualifying young people in the IT field?

One of the main obstacles observed is the gap between the educational background of young people and the demands of the IT job market. Many of these young people, despite their interest and motivation to pursue a career in the field, face significant difficulties in fundamental subjects such as mathematics. This problem not only affects their performance in higher education but also limits their future job opportunities.

Comprehensive training

In addition, there is a further challenge in providing comprehensive training for these young people, understanding that true transformation happens when they are trained in all areas of their lives, not just in terms of technical skills, but also in their personal, family, and professional development. However, achieving this goal requires resources, support, and solid partnerships that are not always easy to obtain.

It is important to recognize the efforts of initiatives like Instituto Atravessando a Ponte, which seek to tackle these challenges head-on. By offering full scholarships in IT courses and investing in the comprehensive development of young people, these initiatives are helping to create a more inclusive and promising future for everyone.

However, to truly overcome the challenges we face in training young people in the IT field, a collective effort is needed.
